The Environment Agency runs the service to issue fish movement permits and authorisations. We are the controller for the personal data we process to provide these services. A controller decides how and why personal data is processed.

Why we are able to process your personal data

We have official authority as the environmental regulator in England under the Salmon and Freshwater Fisheries Act 1975.

The law allows us to process your personal data under article 6(1)(e) of the UK General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). We are allowed to process personal data when we need to carry out tasks in the public interest as a regulator.

What personal data we collect

We collect the personal data asked for during the application process for the service you are applying for.

Our purpose for collecting personal data is to assess and process your application. If you do not give us this information, we cannot give you an authorisation.

The personal data we collect includes your:

  • full name
  • contact details – postal address, email address, and telephone number
  • your internet protocol (IP) address and details of which web browser you use

We may process your personal data in any questions or feedback you send to us, including your email address if you contact us.

What we do with your personal data

We use your personal data to help us:

  • process your application for an authorisation
  • make a decision on your application
  • contact you about your application or authorisation
  • give you an authorisation to use fish instruments (other than rod and line)
  • contact you if we have to make any changes to the authorisation
  • check you are complying with your authorisation
  • carry out potential enforcement action
  • consult with the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, the Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science, the Fish Health Inspectorate, HM Revenue and Customs, Natural England or Natural Resources Wales when necessary to determine your authorisation
  • contact you with important information about related environmental matters
  • fulfil our statutory duty to maintain, improve and develop salmon, trout, freshwater fish and eel fisheries

We may use your email address to contact you for user research to improve our service. You do not have to take part in the research.

We do not use your personal data to make an automated decision or for automated profiling.

Where your personal data is stored, transferred and processed

We store, transfer and process your personal data on our servers in the UK. Your data will not be transferred outside the European Economic Area.

How long we keep your personal data

We keep your personal data while your authorisation is in use (active) and for 3 years from when the authorisation is surrendered by you or expires.

Changes to this notice

We may change this privacy notice. Any changes will apply to you and your data immediately.

If these changes affect how your personal data is processed, we will take reasonable steps to let you know.
